The History of Avon
The brainchild of New York door-to-door salesman David O’Connell, the concept of Avon was first conceived in 1886 when Mr O’Connell found great success moving from book sales to perfume sales.
Originally established as The California Perfume Company, Mr O’Connell quickly grew the business and made a historic appointment. Mrs Albee was named the first General Agent of the company before women even had the right to vote. She played a key role in forming and perfecting a unique sales method which is still paramount to Avon’s success today.
In 1939, upon a visit to Stratford upon Avon and with aspirations to reach customers globally, Mr O’Connell settled on the company name ‘Avon’. Just two decades later in 1959, Avon began operations in the UK, quickly building a reputation as one of the UK’s leading beauty brands.
